The Cell Phone - GSM
The cell phone that you take overseas will need to be GSM, SIM unlocked and compatible with the 900Mhz and 1800Mhz frequencies for Europe, Asia, Africa and parts of the Middle East.

For North and South America, your cell phone must be compatible with the 1900Mhz frequency. Most U.S. subscribers are with a wireless carrier that is not GSM such as Verizon, Nextel, Sprint, Cingular, and AT&T.

The GSM Unlocked Cell Phone
GSM is implemented on different frequencies across the planet. Your international destination will determine which frequencies you will need. In summary:

• Europe, Asia, Africa, the South Pacific and parts of the Middle East operate on the 900Mhz and 1800Mhz frequencies.
• North America and Central America operate on the 850Mhz and 1900Mhz frequency.
• South America and The Caribbean may use the 900Mhz, 1800Mhz and/or the 1900Mhz frequencies.

Some phones switch between bands automatically while others must be set manually. Your two choices are GSM 900/1800 (for your trip to London), or GSM 1900 (for returning to North America).

GSM SIM Cards
You will need a SIM card to activate your phone service at your next international destination. The SIM card (sim chip) is about the size of a standard credit card.

You need to break out the thumbnail sized SIM chip along the perforated edge. This chip is the piece that will actually be inserted into your international cell phone. Your SIM card will determine your phone number. Your GSM phone has a slot, usually located in the back of the phone behind where the battery is inserted. Insert the SIM card into your international cell phone with the gold contacts of the SIM card facing the metal contacts of your international cellular phone.

Airtime Voucher / Recharge Cards (may or may not be required)
You may or may not need to purchase recharge cards. Recharge cards may also be referred to locally as top up cards or refill cards. They may be purchased in country at local Tabac shops, convenience stores and authorized dealers of their respective carriers.

Typical of most recharge cards, you will scratch off the gray protective strip to reveal the code. Once the code has been revealed, simply follow the instructions to add the airtime to your SIM card.
